Finance Manager/Controller (Fixed Term Contract – 12 months)

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced finance lead to join our talented and friendly team on a 12 month fixed term contract to provide support during maternity leave starting in October 2024.
You will provide a hands–on approach, managing all things finance to do with the business. Extensive knowledge of technical finance matters is essential, along with a positive can–do attitude, excellent attention to detail, whilst always striving to deliver the highest standard of work.
Responsibilities & duties
- Day to day management of the Finance department, including purchase and sales ledger, credit control, expenses and credit cards.
- Mentor, support and oversee the work of the Finance Assistant, ensuring accuracy and smooth running of the department.
- Produce financial reports, including monthly management accounts with supporting financial commentary and recommendations.
- Review, monitor and manage forecasts, budgets and spends as required.
- Produce cashflow and cash awareness as required.
- Manage monthly journals, including revenue recognition (deferred/ accrued income), fixed assets, prepayments, accruals, payroll, pension.
- Prepare year–end finances for accountants and check accuracy prior to filing.
- Manage quarterly VAT returns.
- Monitor currency rates and perform currency trade sells at the best rate.
- Provide support for the monthly payroll, if required.
- Resolve any queries relating to tax, audit, banking and other financial needs as necessary from employees, suppliers, clients and others.
- Maintain financial policies, procedures and best practice for the company and work closely with other individuals and teams across the business to ensure they are followed.
- Manage Bupa, pension and other employee benefits.
- Prepare the R&D tax relief submissions, working alongside the Head of Technology.
- Manage and maintain Xero accounting system.
- Manage and maintain Synergist job management system.
- Identify, recommend and implement areas for improvement to increase productivity, efficiency, accuracy, and cost reductions.
- Support the leadership team with other finance related tasks, such as maintaining company records, actioning annual company filings and managing insurance policies, as required.
- Support with general office management and operations duties when necessary.
Technical skills
- Advanced understanding of accounting principles and practices.
- A relevant accounting qualification (ACCA, CIMA or ACA) or part–qualified with experience in a senior finance role.
- Proven experience within a similar role.
- Proactive, hands on with a positive 'can–do' attitude.
- Commercial and business awareness.
- Advanced knowledge and experience of using Xero accounting software.
- Knowledge of Synergist job management system would be beneficial.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks, projects and priorities to ensure they are all delivered on time and to the highest standard.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- An analytical mind and the desire to probe further into data.
- Ability to develop strong working relationships.
- Good mentoring and team development skills.
- Excellent communication – both written and verbal.
- High level of professionalism, ensuring absolute confidentiality at all times.
- Good understanding of GDPR requirements.
- Competent user of Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word and Excel.
- Advanced skills within Microsoft Excel.
