Location: Birmingham, Brighton and Hove, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Jarrow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham

Salary: Salary range is GBP63,185 – GBP72,720, London salary range is GBP66,698 – GBP76,760

Our client is part of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ). They provide civil and criminal legal aid and advice in England and Wales to help people deal with their legal problems.

The Role

The LAA is looking for an experienced person to lead the LAA's People and Capability team. This is an exciting opportunity to take on a highly influential and impactful senior leadership role in the LAA, which also benefits from engagement across the wider MoJ too.

The successful candidate will bring positivity, energy, drive and creativity to the role, as well as a broad range of strategic, change and delivery skills. You'll have strong leadership and influencing skills, experience of working in an Operational environment, and an appetite for data and insight.

The role involves cross LAA and MoJ working and engaging with staff at all levels across the business, owning the delivery of the team's workload and working closely with teams across LAA to deliver people change and transformation.

To effectively deliver your brief you will need to empower and lead through others, demonstrating empathy, emotional intelligence and a passion for making the organisation fair, proud and supportive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development and implementation of the LAA People Strategy and LAA People Plan, supporting delivery of the LAA business plan and leading a team delivering a highly effective people service at all levels in the organisation.
  • You will be a core member of the People Committee, helping to ensure the right discussions are tabled for discussion. You have a responsibility to use LAA governance to maximum effect, identifying which discussions to escalate from People Committee to Executive and Board.
  • You will regularly need to deliver (personally or through others) high quality papers for the LAA Executive meetings and LAA Board meetings. You will be expected to present these at such forums.
  • Responsible for building the Leadership and Managing Change capability across the senior leadership group of the LAA. Linked to which you will work closely with the Transformation team to deliver organisational change as the LAA transforms its processes to be fit for the future.
  • Development of an LAA wide workforce strategy.
  • Ownership of the LAAs recruitment service, ensuring ongoing improvement to process.
  • Ownership of Public Sector Equality Duties, ensuring the LAA meets the requirements of the Equality Act throughout its work.
  • Ownership of LAA people risks and people KPIs.
  • Responsible for the central L&D Budget and the L&D offer delivered across LAA. Ensuring resources are balanced appropriately to equip staff to deliver effectively the day to day operational demands of the agency and the provision of L&D which is progressive, and talent focused.
  • Ownership of talent development at all levels across the LAA, ensuring succession planning is in place.
  • Being a member of the Corporate Services senior management team.
  • Representing the LAA at numerous MOJ wide meetings and supporting the CEO and Deputy Director with people activity.
  • Working collaboratively with the Head of People Services in the Office of the Public Guardian and the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority to maximise opportunities in terms of the people offer across the agencies.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the skill set of this post and grade.
  • The post–holder will be responsible for a team of 20 individuals, who deliver the LAA people offer. The team is geographically dispersed at offices across the country and includes staff across all grades.

Essential Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Visible and inclusive leadership with a track record of empowering and inspiring teams to deliver high levels of performance.
  • Experience of building capability in fast paced environment with Operational Delivery Professionals, delivering high volumes of work within strict targets. Ability to address the challenges that brings in terms of engagement, recruitment, retention and succession planning.
  • Strong communication, influencing and relationship skills with a proven ability to forge highly effective relationships with stakeholders at senior levels.
  • The ability to think strategically and analytically, and to contribute to the development and implementation of organisational strategy. Showcased through your experience of organisational development and supporting the development of an organisation to Lead and Manage change effectively.
  • Expertise across a range of areas of technical responsibility within the role, as outlined in the key tasks, and the ability to empower and lead the team in the other areas.
