The role

As Head of Design Management Group, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary, where you will be an integral part in ensuring that the engineering required to be carried out on critical assets is suitably designed and their maintenance is professionally prescribed.

Day to day, you'll manage the Engineering Delivery and Design Management capability within Facilities Engineering, which is the Design Authority (DA) for Devonport Royal Dockyard. The DA is responsible for ensuring that the assets within both the nuclear licensed site and the rest of the dockyard remain within their design intent. These assets include hundreds of buildings, dock structures, cranes, power distribution systems, pressure systems, water management systems, radioactive waste management, submarine refuel and refit support equipment, and many more.

Key responsibilities as Head of Design Management Group will include:

  • Ensuring that sufficient Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel are employed within the team to enable the high volume of demands on the team to be discharged effectively.
  • Developing the capability of this team to meet the anticipated future demands.
  • Ensuring that the quality of the outputs produced by the team meet the standards expected of a Design Authority within both a nuclear licensed site and a naval dockyard.
  • Providing professional advice and support to Plant Managers and Design & Safety Managers in normal course of duties.
  • Supervising and providing on–the–job guidance to the Design Management team.
  • Ensuring administration of tasks and costs are appropriately recorded in accordance with Corporate Procedures.

Essential experience of the Head of Design Management Group

  • Sound understanding of engineering design and safety practice as relevant to post and project requirements.
  • Sound project specification, planning, project management and budgeting experience.
  • Sound understanding of company and departmental procedures relating to health and Safety, Design and quality.
  • Significant experience of managing and developing people in a technical / engineering organisation.
  • Demonstrable experience of the delivery of major infrastructure design projects, ideally in the nuclear engineering industry.

This role is full time, based at Devonport Royal Dockyard, and offers hybrid working.


Qualifications for the Head of Design Management Group

  • A Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer and member of a relevant engineering institution.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance level for this role.
