Head of IT
We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Head of IT to be responsible for leading the technology across the organisation. You will be expected to have a broad and current knowledge of relevant technology and associated policy issues to lead the technical direction. This exciting role will offer the Head of IT the opportunity to shape services, to ensure a high quality, modern, and flexible offer meets the expectations of all.
As Head of IT you will be responsible for:
- IT system architecture and the 5–year IT systems delivery plan, ensuring overall coherence of technical solutions.
- Supporting development and delivery of the Digital Strategy. You will be keen to encourage innovation within the department, to configure services to meet emerging needs, and to contribute ideas to ensure the continuous improvement of the service.
- Leading cyber security across the organisation and ensure appropriate controls are operationally effective and ensure Cyber Essentials accreditation is maintained.
- Department s Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery plan, including undertaking appropriate testing of the technical solutions in place to support that plan, and to promote training and awareness of those plans.
- The on–premise / cloud infrastructure covering data and telecommunications networks, the data centre rooms, physical server and storage estate, cyber, and desktop devices. This includes ensuring system management is undertaken to the agreed standard and aligned with the organisations information security management policies and that appropriate licenses and support are in place for the various services.
- To lead on all aspects of the Operations, Infrastructure, Application and Data team activities including resource planning, customer–focused response to requirement s and ensuring the performance of the services meet the required standards.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential:
- A relevant degree, equivalent qualification, or relevant professional experience.
- Proven peer leadership within an organisation and ability to influence senior stakeholders
- Experience of identifying and providing innovative academic support services
- Broad knowledge of IT infrastructure technologies and technical direct ion
- Expert knowledge of relevant legislation
- Experience in leading, managing and developing multiple teams of IT staff and in deputising to skilfully lead a whole department including disciplines out side of comfort zone.
- Experience in project and change management with a successful t rack record of delivering IT enabled change projects
- Experience in financial management and successful t rack record in achieving cost reduction targets
- Experience in IT contract management and developing supplier partnerships
- Ability to take the initiative and to organise and prioritise work effectively at scale and pace
- Proven peer leadership within an organisation and ability to influence senior stakeholders
- Ability to deliver outcomes, overcoming obstacles and demonstrating proactive risk management
- Ability to analyse complex data and distil key point s in support of an argument
- Ability to present technical problems and opportunities to senior, non–technical audiences, to secure resources and build support for initiatives.

Desirable
Membership of a relevant institute or society (such as BCS or IET)
Experience of working in the higher education sector.
Knowledge of both Windows and Linux operating systems.

Recognised qualification in Higher Education leadership
Recognised project management qualification (such as PRINCE2 or APM certification)
Experience in Agile software development methodology
Experience of delivery within the HE sector
Demonstration of the required skills and competencies within an HEI
