Head of Engineering (Commercial Trading)
Reporting of the role
This role reports to the Head of Technology (Commercial Trading)
Overview of job
The Commercial Technology team are part of the Technology & Digital Department. We develop and maintain the products that drive the commercial revenues at Global for both the Radio and Outdoor parts of the business. We are organising into 2 functions focused on:
Commercial Trading, which encompasses our trading platforms for internal sales and self–service across Audio and Outdoor for:
- Sales Operations (opportunity management and campaign details)
- Trading (campaign planning and booking)
- Fulfilment (campaign delivery)
Programmatic (DAX, our Audio and Outdoor digital ad platform).
This role owns the Engineering capability in Commercial Trading and is a key member of the Engineering Leadership in Commercial Technology.

Measures of success –
In the first few months, you would have:
- A defined set of development tools and standards and path to having consistently implemented across the team – minimising the time to first contribution for new starters.
- Gained a deep understanding of the business context and partnered with product team members and partners to define the roadmap for the area.
- Definition of the technical target state and development standards for the platforms in Commercial Trading.
Responsibilities of the role
- The definition and agreement of technical solutions that meet goals and drive consistency across Global wherever possible.
- The recruitment, coaching, mentoring and development of your team and broader group building the platforms.
- Accountable for the production performance of the platforms including availability and response times.
- Bridging the gap between engineering and product functions, making the case for technical upgrades while thinking laterally on how best to use technology to achieve the goals of the organisation.
- Active driver of technical standards across Technology & Digital.
What you will need
The ideal candidate will be proactive and willing to develop and implement innovative solutions, capable of demonstrating the following:
- An excellent communicator who takes pleasure in explaining the value that engineering brings.
- A track record of scaling productive cross functional engineering teams working on platforms with product owners.
- Experience of working with digital advertising platforms and a firm opinion of the target platform state being targeted.
- A technical domain that you are comfortable leading in and a number of others you are comfortable contributing in.
- Proven experience at solving complex problems across a whole system, considering performance, security, supportability, maintainability and the complexities of building distributed systems.
- An operational approach, demonstrable experience in relevant tooling and maintaining a production environment including debugging complex issues across a system.
- High standards to get the solution right and ensure it stays right by having relevant development and QA procedures in place.
- Experience in utilising data centric architectures to drive product experiences, and a desire to do more in that area.
- Comfortable working at pace and manage competing and changing priorities.
