We are recruiting for a new role due to growth of the business we are looking for a Chief Engineer, heading up the Robotics and Autonomous Systems division. From concept through to live manufacture you will be responsible for delivering projects across a variety of Land Vehicle's.

The role to provide System, Hardware and Software Development subject matter expertise across multiple Programmes and sites. You will need to be able to offer a broad range of skills from Architecture Development guidance
and advice, software and hardware leadership and detailed task execution when working on the projects to ensure a robust, technically mature and safe design.

Initially Implementing the structure of the department, then recruiting your own internal team and contractor management for delivery of the project. The role really offers the ability to bring your ideas to the table and help shape the future of the business.

The role of the Chief Engineer
  • To initially lead the development and elaboration of a RAS Open Architecture and lead a significant execution programme in the UK.
  • Support Autonomous platform systems integration capability including development of a suitable SW development toolset and process chain, agile development methodologies, and facilities including Systems Integration and Prototyping laboratories.
  • To work with the wider Engineering leadership team to develop detailed capability roadmaps and development plans.
  • To operate as a competent and capable technical specialist providing RAS Development subject matter expertise throughout the project lifecycle, initially with a specific emphasis on the Concept and demonstration phases;
  • To provide RAS Development expertise and assurance in the development of Autonomy systems including Perception, Planning, Actuation and Communication.
  • To provide RAS Development expertise and assurance in the development of Autonomous vehicle and remote platform technologies to achieve Global and congested local environmental perception, mission planning, low level platform control and navigation;
  • To provide development input into Safety analysis and expertise in the application of safety critical application development (e.g. IEC–61508 and ISO26262) and defence standards (e.g. UK Def Stan 00–55 and 00–56) through the design and safety management;
  • To follow a Systems Engineering approach to the design and development of the Autonomous Platform systems including but not limited to the use of requirements decomposition, trade offs, technical maturity assessments, design reviews and verification activities;
  • To support other key areas of the design such as System Modelling, Safety analysis, Supportability analysis and system / sub system integration.
  • To provide architectural and development assessments throughout the design maturation phase reporting levels of compliance as required;
  • To plan, manage and run Autonomous Platform System assessments and Verification activities through the use of prototypes, SILs and other physical or software assets
  • To work with the wider Programme team to plan, create and manage work packages for Software development elements of any appropriate programme.

You will need to communicate well at all levels, we are looking for a stratigic thinker, someone who can make decisions. Working as part of one team is essential, working with integrity, honestly and respect for all.

You will need to have previous management experience, looking after multi disciplinary team of engineers. The ability to drive the results and self motivated.

Skills & Qualifications that are essential in this engineering managers role
  • Tertiary qualifications in engineering or a related discipline
  • To be or to be working towards Chartered Engineer status
  • Experience in the design, development, integration and assessment of Autonomous vehicle systems and sub–systems (e.g. Vision Systems, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Neural Nets, Residual Networks, Feature Pyramid Networks/BiFPNs and Feature Detection Networks);
  • Experience of working with the standards published within ISO/TC 22 and ISO/TC 204 and the technologies required to enable assured system development, test, verification and deployment.
  • Experience in development and application of Software Based Sub–Systems and Safety standards in military platforms (e.g. UK Def Standards and IEC);
  • Experience of working with Legislative organisations, System Safety and Cyber standards such as BS ISO/SAE 21434:2021
  • Applied knowledge of military platform operating environments and vehicle systems.
  • Sound understanding of Systems Engineering methodologies and their application to military vehicle Programmes;
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as a highly capable engineer within the engineering team in both project delivery and bid capture work spheres;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, within a culturally diverse and challenging environment of multiple and geographically dispersed stakeholders.
  • Eligible for, be able to attain; and maintain an SC Clearance
  • The ability to travel to Canada, Germany, other UK sites and further abroad is required
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Azure, Apache Hadoop, Spark AI, MS Project
