The Royal School of Needlework is the International Centre of Excellence for the art of Hand Embroidery since 1872. We are based at the magnificent Hampton Court Palace and we offer classes from beginner to degree levels.

Our strategic plan identifies opportunities to extend an MA programme to our degree offering for both domestic and international students. We want to recast the Future tutor programme so it can be available to a broader range of participants, we want to add an alternative to the C&D programme and we want to extend our short courses by reviewing the balance between one–offs and longer–running courses. There is a lot to do!

This is a new role for the Royal School of Needlework. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the educational programmes of the RSN through the next stage of our development.

This will be a Senior Level position reporting directly to the Chief Executive.

  • Experience with technology
  • Experience in FE and HE and the post 16 educational environment
  • Experience in short courses and technical courses
  • Experience in course enhancement and new course development from online through to face to face and accredited
  • Experience of face to face and online teaching
  • Experience of reviewing systems and processes to streamline operations
  • Excellent negotiating skills and the vision to input strategically
  • Ability to work with people at all levels.
  • Ability to work with remote tutors and satellite locations
  • Good negotiator
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Teams and portals

What will your role as a Director of Education look like?

  • To support, nurture, develop and challenge the staff team leading the delivery of the RSN's educational offering
  • Strategic planning experience and operational knowledge to enable the team to deliver success
  • To review all current courses and locations, online and face–to–face, ensuring their smooth running and how they meet need
  • Managing the bursary process for degree and future tutor students
  • Working with the Trusts and Foundation Manager to support fundraising bids
  • To oversee the development and enhancement of all the RSN's education programmes with the relevant staff teams to meet and anticipate changing customer needs
  • To oversee income and expenditure budgets for all departments and ensure new courses deliver additional income
  • To oversee developments ensuring we are meeting customer need internationally
  • Manage the relationship with our accrediting partners
  • Plan and develop a CPD programme for tutors and academic staff
  • To set the standard for each of our courses within a developed educational framework
  • Working with marketing to promote classes and courses
  • To ensure courses make the best use of physical resources
  • To review and develop the RSN's online offerings
  • To act for the Chief Executive as required
