The role The UAS Chief Engineer is a new role that has been created to provide technical leadership in our rapidly growing UAS focus area. This is an exciting opportunity to build a technical team and deliver systems, from delivery of the initial platforms through to leading an innovation cycle to keep the solutions evergreen and current. Your role will be pivotal in shaping the technical solution for future UAS systems that our armed services will rely on. Day to day, you will be leading the technical team to deliver, ensuring that a SQEP team is recruited, that appropriate systems engineering practices are applied (including model based systems engineering), that airworthiness and regulatory regulations are followed and that engineering risk is managed and mitigated to satisfy Babcock's engineering assurance and to deliver to time, cost and quality. You will have deep knowledge of the UAS domain and you will uses this subject matter expertise to provide advice for other bids and delivery programmes, supporting the UAS Focus Area Lead in growing the portfolio. This role provides hybrid working arrangements with 3 days in the office/onsite and 2 days working from home. Desired experience CAA and MAA UAS airworthiness regulations including, but not limited to; CAP722, RA1600 and RA1605. Flight trials conduct including, but not limited to; planning, conduct and reporting, flight safety, and airspace compliance. Systems engineering approaches, methodologies, and tools, especially MBSE, requirements engineering and system definition. UAS specific technologies such as Ground Control Stations, Detect And Avoid and 'novel' airframe architectures such as quad/hexi/octocopter/tailsitter, swarming, manned–unmanned teaming. Aerospace technologies including; navigation, flight control, sensing (RF and EO), communications and airframes. Operational use cases, especially as related to the British Army.Skills/Behaviours Able to lead multi–disciplinary engineering teams to ensure issues, risk and opportunities are communicated, understood and accounted for across specialisms. Able to identify the most commercially astute means of delivering optimally compliant solutions, whilst maintaining an unwavering commitment to having an open and honest learning culture that puts safety first. Comfortable with ambiguous situations and unclear outcomes. Able to communicate complex concepts and technologies, clearly and digestibly, to non–specialists, from the most junior colleague to the most senior Customer.
