ABOUT US

The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across the many different government departments. Our work touches on most aspects of public life, providing legal advice on everything from roads and rivers to health and human rights.

The Treasury Legal Advisers division of the GLD is the in-house legal team of HM Treasury (HMT) - the UK's finance and economics ministry. We provide legal advice to ministers and officials across all of HMT's functions, including the regulation of financial services, public spending, public sector pensions, market interventions, trade negotiations, sanctions, money laundering, and illicit finance.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We're hiring a Senior Lawyer to join one of the teams within the Treasury Legal Advisers division.
  • As Senior Lawyer, you could join our Public Finance and General team who advise on areas of Treasury policy and specific areas of practice like market interventions and subsidy control issues, public service pensions, information law, public appointments, procurement, and currency and monetary policy.
  • The Senior Lawyer could join our Trade and Negotiations team who cover all aspects of trade policy and are split into two sub-teams - one focusing on Goods, and the other on Services. The Goods sub-team advise on the UK's tariff and border control policy (including issues related to the Northern Ireland Protocol), as well as issues like climate change, freeports, and investment law issues. The Services Sub-Team advise on negotiations relating to financial service chapters of free trade agreements that the UK enters into.
  • Or, as Senior Lawyer, you could join our Financial Services team which is split into three sub-teams. The Banking and Insurance team - who advise on the regulation of banks, insurance, and financial regulation that complies with EU law in post-Brexit world. The Consumer Protection, Payments and Legislation team - who advise on consumer credit and protection, the regulation of payment systems, financial technology, and crypto-assets. And the Markets, Infrastructure and Other Financial Services team who advise on matters relating to Green Finance, primary and secondary markets including infrastructure and reforms, credit unions and building societies.
ABOUT YOU

Ideally, you'll have an honours degree in any subject graded 2.1 or higher or equivalent if you hold an overseas degree qualification. We will also consider applicants who do not have a 2.1 degree, but only if you can provide evidence of professional achievement, qualifications, or experience that satisfies the requirements of this Senior Lawyer role.

You'll have a thorough understanding of public law and an understanding of the role of lawyers working within the government.

You'll be able to competently and reliably make legal judgements and anticipate legal risks. You'll also ensure service delivery adheres to legal, regulatory, and security requirements, both within our division and across the many other government divisions we provide legal advice to.

It would be helpful to have experience or knowledge of some of the laws and regulations covered within the Treasury Legal Advisers division (such as financial crime, financial services regulation, or trade law).

We're looking for a strategic thinker who sees the bigger picture - someone who can spot legal issues in their wider context and advise accordingly. You'll be a great communicator, translating complex and sometimes sensitive information in a clear and concise way that's easy to understand.

We're looking for a team player who's ready to build strong relationships both with colleagues and key stakeholders around the organisation.

Benefits

GLD encourages its people to develop their skills and provides the opportunity to move between advisory, litigation, employment and commercial law services during your career, should you wish to do so.
