Controls Systems Engineer

Location: Hybrid working – remote and Warrington/Derby

Rolls–Royce SMR is a start–up joint special purpose vehicle (SPV) business, specifically created to design, construct and deliver a new fleet of Small Modular Reactors power plants that will be a critical and strategic player in the race to Net Zero carbon emissions globally. Spun out of Rolls–Royce with its pedigree in engineering excellence but also attracting world class inward investment this is an exciting new business with an optimistic opportunity to be a global player in the coming years.

The Post
There are several posts for talented Controls & Instrumentation (C&I) Systems Engineers to join an innovative and diverse C&I Team. The Controls Systems Engineer will be involved in the specification, design and validation of complex systems

Key Responsibilities
• Review and agree high level electrical requirements including design constraints and quality attributes.
• Translate high level requirements into a specification for the electronic systems,
Analyse and trade design options, using robust systems engineering and decision making.
Define and implement electronic designs.
• Assess and substantiate that the design specification meets the requirements.
• Write Validation Plans and define test vehicles to demonstrate that the electrical requirements have been satisfied.
• Liaises with other disciplines to understand functional performance capabilities of components of the system to facilitate effective component design.
• Support to planning and implementation of policies and procedures to related to the life cycle of an electrical product.
• Ensure that optimum solutions are provided for the RR SMR Nuclear Power Plant by supporting the procurement, production, and maintenance aspects of the equipment.
• Contribute to the production of safety cases and provide support in liaising with regulators and independent nuclear safety assessors.

Colleagues should encourage best practice around Knowledge and Document management.

Qualifications & Experience
• A Degree qualification in one or more of the engineering disciplines of electrical, electronics, instrumentation, controls, mechanical and physics. Additionally, applicants without a degree who can nevertheless demonstrate suitable experience may also be considered.
• Knowledge of the nuclear or other high integrity industries is beneficial.
• Knowledge and experience of complex safety critical systems or industrial process plants is beneficial.
• Knowledge of Functional Safety standards such as IEC 61508 and 61513 is beneficial.

• Travel: Contracted location of work is in Warrington or Derby although we operate a hybrid working policy allowing you to work remotely with the agreement of your leader, though may require some travel within the working day when visiting other branches or organisations.
• Working hours: 37 hrs per week are standard office hours with some overtime as required.
