St Helena Island, South Atlantic

2 years FTC available immediately

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self–governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self–sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid.

You will lead the transition from separate Customs and Immigration services to a combined department, integrating all functions and services within the two teams. Fulfilling the statutory role of Chief Immigration Officer, you will plan, direct, manage and oversee the activities and operations of the Revenue & Customs and Immigration Services, setting a direction and culture that builds public and organisational confidence and trust.

Developing and implementing effective policies, procedures and training plans you will ensure that the Portfolio Director and Collector of Customs & Excise has access to the best professional advice and information on all aspects of Customs and Immigration. Attending Committees, you will advise as required and engage with colleagues across the public service to deliver the strategic vision for Customs and Immigration.

Holding a Level 5 or 6 (degree) qualification or equivalent experience, you will have a substantial background as a senior manager within the UK Border Force (or Customs or Immigration services) or in a UK Overseas Territory. Your up–to–date knowledge of customs and immigration issues will be supported by time providing customs and/or immigrations services at airports and seaports. You are experienced at analysing and interpreting information to develop solutions or solve problems and in planning and implementing change, whilst able to influence, network and use professional judgement and diplomacy to make decisions. You will be vetted to 'Security Clearance' level.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co–Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
