We are seeking a lawyer with c. 2 - 4 years PQE with finance or other transactional experience, to join our friendly, supportive and market-leading team advising impact investors and social ventures.

As a B Corp, we seek to have a positive impact through our work and in all we do as a firm. We are champions of the impact economy and advise many of the key players in the marketplace.

We undertake innovative and challenging work on impact investment deals, acting for investors, as well as charities, social ventures and purpose-driven businesses raising finance.

We empower our lawyers to pursue their personal interests through their practice, with encouragement and support to build their own networks, client relationships and specialist expertise.

We offer greater flexibility than most City firms and welcome applications on a full or part time basis.

Key responsibilities
  • Advising clients
  • Adopting a tailor-made approach, to honour the integrity and social purpose of the organisation receiving investment, you will:
  • Structure, document and execute the whole spectrum of impact finance transactions and activities. This includes investments in the form of debt, equity, quasi-equity, investment funds, crowdfunding and others; and
  • Support clients to navigate through the legal and regulatory issues that may arise from their investment, including charity law issues, FCA regulatory considerations and related constitutional and governance issues.
  • There will also be a need to undertake broader corporate and commercial work for charities and social enterprises, including working with members of our wider market leading charity and social enterprise team, and more broadly via our cross- departmental sector groups. It is likely that, in addition to impact finance deals, you will develop a wide-ranging practice.
  • Business development
  • You will contribute to proposals, pitches, events and content; build your external profile and networks; deepen your relationships through regular direct contact with clients, prospects and referrers; and help to generate and deliver new ideas for developing business.
  • Knowledge
  • You will contribute to the continued development of our market leading internal know- how, collaborating with our Impact Economy Knowledge Lawyer.
  • Supervision
  • You will contribute to the career development of our trainees and paralegals.
  • Specific tasks may change over time, so we'll need you to be adaptable and flexible as we continue to meet our clients' needs. About you
    • You see the value in Bates Wells as a career choice and view Bates Wells as a high quality employer.
    • You share our values and want to make a difference.

    • We promote a strong work/life balance with 25 days holiday with the opportunity to buy more and a 'Summer in the City' early-Friday-finish.
    • We have an agile working environment - this means you might sit next to a different colleague every day or choose to work from our rooftop garden if you are in the office. We are currently reviewing our policies to enable a hybrid model moving forward.
    • Our culture encourages clear and honest dialogue and cross-team support
    • The firm review salaries annually as part of the appraisal process in July of each year. However, we encourage our staff to engage with their supervisors throughout the year on feedback and objective setting.
