Babcock International
Head of Design Authority (Major Infrastructure)
SF39601
Business Unit: Strategic Infrastructure
Location: South West England
About the role
A significant programme of infrastructure investment is required on the Devonport site to meet the needs of the future MOD ship and submarine programmes. A 'Major Infrastructure Projects' (MIP) team has been established to focus on the significant facility developments and they are seeking an experienced Engineering Leader to take up the role of Head of MIP Design Authority.
The Head of MIP DA reports directly to the Engineering Director on the DRDL Executive Committee. They act as the Transient Design Authority for Major Infrastructure Projects and oversee a significant sized Engineering team including the MIP Office of Chief Engineer and embedded project Design and Safety teams.
As the Head of MIP you'll act as Design Authority from project start up through design, construction and commissioning to handover prior to first nuclear use. You'll provide technical governance and assurance to ensure the design intent is established and design integrity is maintained through to handover.
Within the role you'll engage with senior colleagues to ensure designs are implemented in the as–builts and that the as–builts meet the design intent. Ultimately you'll be responsible for approval of the facility designs and their implementation via the Certificates of Design and Certificates of Conformance.
Although this role is heavily involved with major infrastructure defence projects we will consider applicants from all highly regulated, commercial backgrounds such as Construction, Defence, Oil & Gas, and Nuclear. As well as working on some of the most high–profile projects in the UK we also offer a supportive work environment where innovation is at the heart of what we do.
What do I need to do the role?
You'll need a sound understanding of engineering design and safety practice as relevant to infrastructure/facility project requirements as well as experience in the technical leadership of large scale and complex projects throughout the design lifecycle, including regulatory interactions.
We'd like you to have strong team leadership, technical leadership, communications and interpersonal skills including comprehensive editorial and briefing ability.
What else do I need to know?
– Ideally you will be based in the South West and be able to regularly travel to site as required.
– The role is on a permanent basis supporting the Devonport Royal Dockard, Plymouth, Devon, GB, PL1 4SG.
