Senior Systems Engineer – Land Systems

We have an opportunity for a Senior Systems Engineer to join our growing team of systems engineers and domain experts who support our MOD customer in systems research and development in the Military Land domain.

About the role

QinetiQ has been delivering research and engineering support in the development and exploitation of open electronic architecture principles, technologies and standards to the MoD Land domain since the beginnings of integrated networked electronic systems in Land platforms. This area has grown significantly in the past five years and now, in addition to vehicles, extends to an integrated soldier systems endeavour, plus bases, and is also addressing the challenges of cohering with the architectures of robotic and autonomous systems, battlefield communication and information systems, nano–UAS, etc. The Land Integrated Delivery Team (IDT) has significant work in this area and sees greater opportunities in the coming years and is seeking to increase capacity in its open architectures competencies.

What will I be doing?

You will be capturing research requirements and develop and deliver tasks that will ultimately satisfy those requirements. This will involve interaction with the customer to agree the approach and discussions with 3rd parties, inside and outside of QinetiQ, to bring in specialist expertise where it is required. The research tasks will need technical co–ordination in addition to the research activity itself; you will work with a technical lead and a project manager to ensure timely and effective delivery.

The nature of the role is flexible, so it could be very hands–on, involving practical implementation and trial of ideas in experimental rigs, or paper based studies, or the direction of others internal or external to QinetiQ.

Some of your key tasks will include:

The application of a systems engineering approach and execution of key systems engineering activities on significant projects
Engaging with internal and external stakeholders, project managers and senior technical staff to ensure customer and business needs are satisfied appropriately and that problems are mitigated
Leading technical tasks, individually or leading a small team, in support of project objectives, structuring work of others and reviewing output
Eliciting requirements from customer stakeholders, understanding them, and addressing their satisfaction
Production of engineering documentation, capturing findings projects as deliverables to the customerWhat do I need?

To be a strong match for this position you are likely to enjoy investigating new technologies and their potential exploitation, listening to customers and working with them to identify and define the problem. You will ideally have proven experience and be comfortable with taking ownership of tasks, driving them to conclusion, working with many diverse and competing stakeholders. We are looking to speak with driven, inquisitive, self–reliant and independent people with good oral and written communication skills.

Other relevant areas of interest / experience include military technology, equipment, operating systems, command structures, communications, command & control systems, soldier's equipment and roles, electronics and electonic systems, UML and MDA.

We are seeking a blend of the following skills and experiences:

Systems engineering and/or engineering research experience gained over 3+ years
Success in leading significant tasks and/or small projects
Understanding of principles of data communications and network technology (e.g. LAN technologies, transport protocols, application layer protocols)
Proven work with customers, extracting requirements, managing expectations, resolving problems on significant tasks and/or small projectsMentoring and support is available to complement your particular skills and experience.

What's in it for me?

You will learn about the complex and diverse technical challenge that is the Army's endeavour to digitise the battlespace and to develop and deploy next generation communication and information management systems to the battlefield and to the fighting platforms. You'll also to realise the potential of integrating core battlefield systems with edge systems such as GVA, GSA and then again with RAS and nUAS, following the principles of open, flexible, scalable architectures so that the Army gains from the through life benefits of reduced cost, enhanced operational effectiveness and agile exploitation of electronic resources and new technologies.
