Chief ExecutiveWe are seeking a dynamic leader to lead our organsation through an exciting period of change and growth. Location: Based in SouthwarkContract: PermanentSalary: £45,000–£55,000 plus benefitsClosing Date: 22nd October 2021Interviews: Week commencing 25th October BackgroundSouthside Young Leaders Academy (SYLA) is a leadership charity based in Southwark, South–East London, that exists to develop leadership potential in boys aged 8–16 of African and Afro–Caribbean heritage. We work with boys living in deprived areas and at risk of social exclusion. We focus on working with boys from these backgrounds as part of our community’s response to the ongoing problem of gang violence – but also low educational and professional attainment, which limits our boys’ exposure to the fullest range of role models and examples for ways in which they could develop their lives. SYLA was founded in 2007, and since our inception we have mentored more than 200 boys, trained 60 parents, and provided our in–school programme to 20 schools. We are run by a team that combines permanent, sessional and volunteer staff. The permanent team is currently made up of four (including this role), and we have up to 20 sessional and volunteer staff. We have an actively involved, and highly dedicated trustee Board who use their skills to help achieve the mission. Appointment of a CEOThe Chief Executive is the leader of the SYLA team, and oversees all elements of our operations, ensuring that the team are supported in carrying out their individual responsibilities. We are looking for an inspiring and dynamic individual to lead our team, grow our income sustainably, and amplify our impact. Our ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of, and interest in, the challenges facing black and mixed–raced families. A strategic thinker who can identify opportunities for growth and drive positive change in the organisation and the broader community. Someone who is comfortable with a coaching approach, and who has excellent relationship building skills and the ability to meaningfully engage with a large and varied group of stakeholders (including parents & funders). Application is by CV and a covering letter which should indicate why you are interested in applying for the role and how you meet the role requirements. The closing date for applications is Friday 22nd October, with shortlisting interviews taking place immediately afterwards. SYLA is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion within the recruitment process. We are also happy to discuss any flexible working needs (e.g. part–time). If possible, please indicate your needs at application stage and flexible working can form part of the discussion at offer stage.
