University Hospital Southampton (UHS) is a great organisation, on a journey to become an ‘Outstanding’ organisation with world class people delivering world class care. As the major university hospital on the south coast, they provide tertiary medical and surgical specialities to over 3.7 million people in central southern England and the Channel Islands.

They work with the University of Southampton and Solent University to educate and develop staff at all levels, including a large apprenticeship programme, undergraduate and postgraduate education.

Their role in research distinguishes them as a hospital that works at the leading edge of healthcare developments in the NHS and internationally. In particular they have nationally-leading research into cancer, respiratory disease, nutrition, cardiovascular disease, bone and joint conditions and complex immune system problems.

This is a large and complex organisation, with over 12,000 employees and a turnover of c£1bn. The team work in a dynamic and fast paced environment, where they are always evolving and always improving. UHS also play an integral role in their ICS and have developed mature and productive relationships with their system partners.

By constantly achieving operational innovation and better value for money, they have been able to generate the funds necessary to make a number of capital investments and they are currently in the process of delivering an ambitious £50m capital programme. UHS are also one of NHS England’s Digital Exemplars, pioneering the world-class use of digital technologies and information.

This is an exciting time to join UHS, as they continue to deliver their ‘Always Improving - Quality Improvement’ programme, which will strengthen the UHS brand so that they are recognised as the employer of choice both regionally and nationally. In addition to this, they have also recently appointed a new Chief Executive (previously the Trust’s Director of Finance). This appointment has led to a number of opportunities arising within the finance function, one of these being Assistant Director of Finance (Capital and Planning).

This is a key leadership role and as the postholder you will play an important role in developing and mentoring colleagues to create a ‘best in class’ finance function within UHS.
