Role Overview

We are looking for proactive, enthusiastic, and driven individual to help shape techUK's emerging focus on National Security, along with our existing work in justice and policing. Working across techUK's National Security focused programmes, this role will help to deliver new opportunities for techUK members by establishing new relationships with key stakeholders and building on the activities of our existing market programmes.

Overview of techUK's National Security Focused Programmes

Defence

techUK's Defence programme works to help the UK's Defence technology sector align itself with the MOD, ensuring that Defence's contribution to national security is underpinned by successful technology adoption and exploitation. The programme aims to help the MOD maintain competitive advantage, and delivers a broad range of activities to support the department as it procures new digital technologies.

Justice & Emergency Services

techUK's Justice and Emergency Services Programme provides a forum for criminal justice and public safety stakeholders, including national policing bodies such as the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) and Police Digital Service (PDS) and local forces, opportunities to collaborate with members and stakeholders to understand the latest innovations, problem–solve and develop networks. The programme creates a voice for members active, or looking to break into the market, and champions the vital role technology plays in supporting the delivery of critical public safety services.

Cyber Security

techUK's Cyber Security programme provides a channel for the Cyber Security industry to engage with industry and government partners to strengthen collaboration and enhance UK cyber capabilities, increase cyber exports and to stimulate awareness and demand for cyber security in the UK. The programme also has a focus on crucial role Cyber Security plays in maintaining the UK's national security, and works closely with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in a range of areas including assurance, skills development and Zero–Trust.

Purpose

This role reports to techUK's Associate Director for Defence & National Security, and its purpose is to support techUK's work across the counter terrorism and national security space. The role spans the activities of the three techUK programmes working on National Security and Policing related activities: Defence, Justice & Emergency Services, and Cyber Security.

This challenging and wide–ranging position provides an opportunity to work with senior level representatives from industry and government to support the development and implementation of a challenging agenda. The role will encompass the support and development of policy and market engagement activities related to Counter–Terrorism, Policing and National Security, with a particular focus on establishing new relationships and opportunities for member companies in these areas. This role would suit an articulate and enthusiastic individual, with the ability to support the development of new policy and the delivery of projects and events.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work across several techUK market programmes, engaging with a variety of industry, policing, and government stakeholders at both the working and senior level. The candidate and will develop a good understanding of the opportunities and challenges in the use of technology for policing and national security purposes.

This role requires someone who has the communication skills, confidence, and drive to grow their own profile and that of techUK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Present techUK as the voice of the technology industry to government, police forces, the UK Intelligence Community, and other key stakeholders, building new relationships and developing new opportunities for market engagement activity in these areas;
  • Support and promote the development of techUK's Counter Terrorism, Policing and National Security activities through insights, analyses, and social media;
  • Lead the development, implementation and management of projects, white papers, workshops, and events that aim to resolve shared challenges between the technology industry and the wider economy;
  • Lead the set–up and execution of programme events, briefings, and meetings;
  • Liaise with other techUK teams to identify and exploit cross–fertilisation opportunities with other programmes across techUK;
  • Support the work of various relevant member boards, committees, and forums, maintaining liaison with group members;
  • Any other duties that might from time to time be required by the wider Defence, Justice & Emergency Services and Cyber Security teams, as well as the techUK leadership team.

Person Specification

Competencies

  • Ability to identify, propose and negotiate new opportunities and services for member companies across the Policing and National Security market areas;
  • A self–motivated individual with a positive can–do approach who is comfortable working with competing demands and responding to tight deadlines;
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical and policy information effectively to a range of audiences;
  • A team player who has experience of managing relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and is comfortable working with senior individuals in industry and government;
  • Comfortable with public speaking;
  • Ability to use the tools and technologies techUK provides; including but not limited to Microsoft Office 365, CRM, mobile and home working software, web tools and social media;

Essential Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Strong interest in Counter Terrorism, Policing and National Security policy, including current challenges and opportunities for technology sector in these market areas;
  • An understanding of the UK Cyber Security landscape, including knowledge of the relevant government strategies and interventions across the Cyber Security sector and how these impact National Security;
  • Experience of running events, briefings, and webinars for a wide range of stakeholders;

Desirable Knowledge and Experience

  • Detailed understanding of the Policing and National Security sectors, including the relevant bodies, organisations, and government departments in these market areas;
  • A well–established network of contacts and connections with key stakeholders across the Policing and National Security sectors;
  • Good high–level knowledge of technology trends and the UK technology industry;
  • An understanding of the UK's innovation ecosystem, and how the UK technology industry interacts with it;
  • An understanding of the economic, social, and political environment, members' business sectors and business models, stakeholders, and their drivers;

This is a full–time role based out of techUK's London offices, however techUK operates a flexible working policy.

This role profile is a guide to the work that is required but does not form part of any contract of employment and may change from time to time to reflect changing circumstances.

The successful candidate must have permission to work in the UK prior to the commencement of employment.
