Leonardo has a fantastic opportunity for a Principal Systems Engineer to work on a high–profile project for the UK MOD. The Principal Systems Engineer will join the Major Air Programmes business group, within the Integrated Systems Test, Evaluation & Acceptance (ISTEA) Systems Engineering team. The role will provide exposure to a wide–variety of Electronic Warfare (EW) products and subject–matter experts within domain, product, and technology fields.

The Principal Systems Engineer will lead aspects of the ISTEA group's system integration, test, verification, validation (IV&V) and trials activities, to support the demonstration and acceptance of airborne RF and EO EW capability at a system–of–systems level.

The role inherently requires a strong aptitude for problem solving and managing multiple system interdependencies across a number of Leonardo business groups.

The Principal Systems Engineer will apply their knowledge and experience of systems engineering to achieve agreed project milestones and associated deliverables, alongside mentoring and support to team members for test, acceptance and trials activities.

Product development:

Manage collaboration with multiple design teams at all stages of the product lifecycle
Create / develop the Integration, Test, Evaluation Plan (ITEAP) and achieve sign–off
Identify appropriate levels / methods of test for given scenarios
Design and develop test environments, incl. specifying required test equipment.
Identify and prepare test facilities suitable for ITEAP execution

ISTEA IV&V strategy:

Identify development / investment opportunities at a system–of–systems level
Work closely with Operational Analysis and Model–Based Systems Engineering teams to create state–of–the–art test and evaluation solutions for future product releases
Contribute to resource estimation, planning, and reporting.
Identify risks to solutions and delivery and participate in proactive risk management.

Lead system integration and testing:

Manage the schedule of testing in accordance with the ITEAP.
Identify, manage and resolve any issues that may arise.
Produce / document / analyse test data.
Generation of system level verification cross reference matrix (VCRM).
Contribute to engineering design reviews, in particular test readiness.
Achieving acceptance / certification from relevant design authorities.

Supporting development of the overall system trials strategy:

Support the definition of the trials aims and objectives.
Manage the creation / development of test environments and flight trial scenarios
Manage day–to–day tasking of more junior engineers, providing mentoring and coaching.
Leading engagements with customer network to ensure cohesion and suitability of integration activities and timelines.

You really must have:

A solid foundation in a relevant technical domain, exploited in an airborne (ideally EW) systems context / application.
Experience of leading and performing IV&V activities complex systems, including authoring, reviewing, and presenting test plans, procedures, and reports.
Strong ability with DOORS software, which is essential to capture and manage test and verification evidence and associated requirements traceability.
Experience of leading engineering gate reviews and the associated assessment of design compliance.
Ability to cope with a high degree of design complexity and significant levels of uncertainty.
Experience of supporting design / delivery teams to develop complex, technical solutions in accordance with plans and processes.
Self–motivated with an aptitude for problem solving and driving difficult issues to conclusion alongside excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Experience of mentoring and coaching peers and/or junior engineers.
Experience of working with a variety of internal and external stakeholders of varying seniorities.
Ability to obtain SC Clearance for UK–caveated programmes.
