As part of Major Air Programmes (MAP) within Leonardo Electronic Division (LED), the Capability Manager will lead the continued technical development of integrated systems & associated architectures linked to sensors and non–kinetic effects for Future Platforms. This will include the identification and prioritisation of critical technologies within MAP for investment and influencing through the CTO function investment within the Leonardo Electronics Lines of Business; this will ensure a coherent and co–ordinated approach is delivered for integrated multi–spectral sensing and effectors at a platform level. Core to delivering this role is deep knowledge of integrated system architectures and how they could relate to 5th Generation+ Combat Air platforms and requirements to meet the current and future threat environment; a knowledge of AI/ML is also increasingly important. Though this role is focused on the sensing and non–kinetic effects arena, a knowledge of communication architectures is also desirable.

This exciting and broad role depends on the highest standards of technical knowledge and elements of leadership and collaborative working across all Leonardo Electronics Lines of Business (LoB), and between Leonardo Divisions, in addition to Customers, Partners, Suppliers and End Users within the UK, Europe and the globe.

Key Responsibility Areas

Aligned with the MAP Strategy:

Technical leadership of Integrated Sensing and Non–kinetic Effects (ISANKE) capability development within MAP and LED UK
Ensure MAP ISANKE technical decisions, targets, forecasts, investments and plans have a sound technical basis for the long term growth of the business
Develop and maintain the best MAP ISANKE business and technology strategies (product roadmaps, concepts, product plans, technology plans, business cases, advanced research)
Drive the development of the right MAP ISANKE solutions in the right timeframes, exploiting new emerging technologies where possible (eg AI/ML)
Secure external funding for ISANKE programmes where applicable
Deliver AI/ML technology exploitation to support next generation ISANKE capabilities

Within the IPT(s):

Technical leadership and focal point for all ISANKE related capabilities
Support business winning through technical engagement
Support MAP within the current programmes and growth strategies
Identify potential industrial partners relevant to the designated platform and associated product set
Acting as the customer, specification and maintenance of Concepts and Capability Requirements for products/services within the designated platform strategy or product
Provide specialist operational, technical advice and support to customers and across Leonardo
Chair Solution Reviews ensuring the customer value proposition is optimised and the solution is consistent with Leonardo platform and product strategy
Ensure effective technical governance and delivery of consistent technology best practice across MAP, within own area of control and supporting others

Business Growth

Contribute significantly to sustainable business growth activities including working across LED Capability and Sales functions to identify growth opportunities
Collaborate across the business to ensure appropriate representation of Leonardo with customers, suppliers & partners and facilitate and support cross–LoB business development opportunities
Develop and maintain relationships with customers, key suppliers and partners to directly support the definition and direction of future capabilities and allocation of budgets

Operational Excellence

Collaborate with Chief Engineers and Heads of Engineering Projects to ensure the correct balance between capability and cost (NRE and UPC) is achieved
Ensure effective technical governance and delivery of consistent technology best practice across designated Lines of Products
Identify business inefficiencies and propose business improvements to address them

Learning & Growth

Help develop and implement a cost conscious mentality across the business to achieve an environment focused on high performance
Provide operational and technical leadership to develop others within the IPT and across the business

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required

High levels of knowledge linked to integrated System Architectures and Concepts linked to ISANKE and Systems of Systems approaches for delivering future capability requirements.
Knowledge of open mission system architectures and principles
Knowledge of advanced avionic architectures and their deployment within future combat systems
Knowledge of AI/ML approaches specific to the sensing domain
General knowledge of the +5th Generation Combat Air sector including an overview of current and future operational requirements, threat environment and User Concepts of Operation.
Knowledge of Leonardo Elec Div product portfolio associated within the Combat Air sector
Able to motivate and influence multi–disciplined teams that are not necessarily within their direct reporting structure
Able to develop and maintain strong relationships with Leonardo Divisions and LoBs, customers, partners and suppliers
Able to clearly articulate verbally and in written form, strategies, complex concepts and solution design
Experience of complex, cross LOB solutions is highly desirable.

Intrinsic Factors
