Sensor Systems Engineer
Location: Glasgow, UK.
Salary: GBP31,000 to GBP35,000 dependent on experience and capability.
Contract: Full time, permanent.
Synaptec is a highly–innovative young company based in the centre of Glasgow. We were founded in 2014 with a mission to become the globally–leading innovator in photonic instrumentation for the electrical power industry, with planned future expansion into other energy sectors. We are here to facilitate change in the power sector: to push for the adoption of cutting–edge technologies, and to enable the move to a smarter, cleaner grid. In recognition of our vision and capability, we have been awarded various prizes, most recently the Energy Innovation Award for Best Offshore Wind Technology.
Synaptec uniquely blends the disciplines of photonics, electronics, power and instrumentation to enable our clients to instantly know the electrical, mechanical and environmental state of their systems and networks. To keep us at the cutting–edge, we are committed to recruiting excellent engineers and physicists and developing their abilities to the full.
Synaptec aims to be an equal opportunities employer and we are determined to ensure that no applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of gender, age, disability, religion, belief, sexual orientation or identification, marital status, or race, or is disadvantaged by conditions or requirements which cannot be shown to be justifiable. We are proud to be an accredited Living Wage Employer and member of the Living Wage Foundation.
Overview of role
The Sensor Systems Engineer will be part of a growing team led by technical and business experts, and will be involved in significant parts of the development cycle of Synaptec's sensing technologies; from design, simulation and prototyping of new hardware to calibration and testing of commercial systems for deployment.
The role is focussed on development of instrumentation for the power industry, utilising both electronic and photonic technologies. Prior experience and confidence in an electronics or photonics laboratory or development environment will be important. It is expected that the Engineer will gain invaluable interdisciplinary experience, and will take opportunities to develop new skills and input at a growing level to Synaptec's success.
The Engineer should be flexible and capable of contributing to, and performing, a wide range of activities. As Synaptec is a growing company, these activities could include assisting with writing proposals and reports, acting as the technical lead on particular innovation or commercial projects, meeting with industrial clients and prospects, or representing the company at project meetings.
The post will report on a day–to–day basis to the company's Head of Sensor Technologies, and will be expected to provide updates to the wider team on technical progress, and to produce detailed reporting on work or investigations undertaken.
This is a full–time post based at the Company's facilities in central Glasgow. Occasional site visits or short–term working at client or supplier sites may be required.
Essential criteria
The candidate will be able to demonstrate or rapidly develop:
• An excellent postgraduate qualification in engineering, physics or natural sciences
• Experience of design and testing of electronic or photonic systems or systems of similar complexity
• C, Matlab fluency for sensor simulation, testing and data analysis
• Fibre optics and optoelectronic system knowledge, including practical working knowledge of splicers, optical spectrum analysers, etc.
• Familiarity with electronic/power/photonic product packaging and prototyping
• Self–motivation and an ability to work autonomously, including the ability to manage own time and workload effectively
• Strong experimental design, execution and evaluation skills
• Confidence with team–working in a high–technology environment
• Good verbal communication skills and attitude, with an ability to discuss technical information in clear and simple terms with colleagues and customers
• Ability to prepare concise, accurate, high–quality documents and presentations, with excellent attention to detail
Differentiating criteria
• Strong programming skills, e.g. C, VHDL, Verilog
• Familiarity with electronic prototyping, covering both analogue and digital electronics
• Familiarity with high voltage or power engineering
• Knowledge of FEM analysis; electrical, electromagnetic, stress–strain and thermal modelling and analysis
• Proficiency in CAD and mechanical design
For this role, we particularly encourage applications from women.
