Primary function:

The position is responsible for working closely with the board on the development of the technical strategy. This is delivered through two key technical functions: R&D (new product innovation, day to day technical support, production scale–up and QC) and Applications (formulating/customizing new technologies to meet specific customer needs and product testing to ensure requirements are met), each with its own dedicated resource. The role has clear leadership responsibility for both departments achieving their objectives; but is particularly focused on driving the applications function, ensuring that R&D is tuned into the exact needs of customers.

The Role:

* Deliver and provide support in the development of the innovation strategy as defined by the board of directors, in line with the commercial strategy for the business to achieve growth and margin targets.

* Ensuring that the output of the R&D department is in line with market demands and the applications team are focused on the delivering the most commercially viable projects that can be tailored to meet specific customer needs.

* Act as the link between the senior management team and the technical function ensuring that expectations are delivered against and priorities are fully understood.

* Provide leadership to the technical function ensuring that plans are in place for technical projects. Drive the pace and quality of Group R&D activities across two sites both UK and international.

* Create structure in the technical team making sure that it remains focused in achieving its KPI's and fundamentally delivering the key technical projects taking account of both internal and external expectations. Instils drive and standards across the whole department.

* Lead the development and maintenance of the product portfolio. Be a source of ideas for new products that directly impact delivery of the commercial strategy, which delivers growth targets and meets the needs of the customer base.

* Leadership of the regulatory function including liaising with third parties and consultants to ensure compliance in new markets.

* Manage and proactively develop the raw material portfolio to reduce complexity and introduce new technical properties.

* Support production in terms of product implementation, customer complaint resolution and troubleshooting.

* Responsibility for all laboratories, equipment and people within the Technical department.

* Be the external technical ambassador of the company at conferences and exhibitions.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

* Educated to degree level with demonstrable technical leadership experience in the chemicals industry (e.g. coatings, adhesives, polymers, pigments, additives).

* Excellent technical thinker with a proven track record of new product innovation and driving customized applications development projects.

* Good business sense with ability to think strategically and implement the technical strategy as set out by the board.

* High levels of self–motivation, tenacity and drive.

* Significant regulatory knowledge/experience.

* Strong leadership and people management skills.

* Experience in prioritising projects and workload for self and the technical team.

* Excellent interpersonal skills and relationship building.

* Good analytical skills and ability to learn new concepts quickly.
