Role overview:
The Senior Programme Manager:
– is responsible for coordinating and managing a portfolio of projects and/or programmes, and for reporting on them through the governance structure. In a number of cases, the projects or programmes will be interrelated and will contribute in complementary ways to the same strategic objectives.
– has a proven track record for delivering projects and/or programmes to time, cost and quality, by defining detailed project plans, liaising with internal resources to ensure milestones are met, acting as a prime point of contact with the key customers and suppliers, and addressing all necessary factors to ensure project success.
– is equally able to manage and lead a small team of project managers and project coordinators across the portfolio as required.
The ideal candidate for this role will be a confident, enthusiastic, versatile, determined, and organised individual who is keen to develop their career in a dynamic environment; he/she is likely to have previous R&D project management experience in a technical organisation.
Key responsibilities:
Accountable for planning and execution of an assigned portfolio of projects according to business and technology strategy
Proactively promote our values, principles, and policies; ensuring that ethical, legal, and corporate requirements are applied in all internal and external dealings
Demonstrate leadership, empower, and inspire the team to achieve success
Identify and manage internal and external stakeholders, maintaining a good understanding of their influence and interests; ensuring that confidentiality requirements are always maintained
Prepare, issue, and obtain approval of the Project Charters in accordance with our Project Delivery Process; ensure that the Charters are maintained throughout the project life cycle including the effects of changes in scope, timing, and cost
Ensure each projects objective are clear and unambiguous, and that success is defined and achievable
Deliver all projects in accordance with our Project Delivery Process and in compliance with our Quality Procedures
Prepare and maintain the programme and project plans, including key milestones and deliverables, ensuring that dependencies and resourcing needs are accurately defined to inform capacity planning activities
In close cooperation with functional leaders, identify and secure the resources required to deliver each project successfully within the constraints of budget, time, and capacity
Manage internal and external costs through consistent planning and tracking; maintaining accurate variance to plan, forecast and cost to complete information; prepare programme summaries as required
Define, develop, and manage the delivery teams to achieve all project objectives
Proactively manage the programme and project risks, recording their identification, quantification and mitigation in the risk register and monitoring them; accordingly, know when to escalate risks to senior management
Prepare and maintain project management reports in accordance with our reporting framework through regular and structured programme and project reviews
Collate and consolidate project and programme components (i.e. scope, schedule, resource requirements, budgets, risks, opportunities and issues, and quality requirements) to clearly articulate the overall programme / portfolio performance; being able to drill–down into specific detail where required
Maintain control of contractual requirements and deliverables, engaging with Commercial colleagues where required
Identify and manage changes in project scope, timing, and cost through our Change Control Notification process; ensuring that controlled documents (e.g., Project Charters) are updated and approved as required by the process
Be proactive in resolving conflict to meet the project, programme, and corporate objectives; knowing when to escalate issues
Ensure that team roles, responsibilities and accountabilities are defined in accordance with our business requirements
Supervise and develop direct reports; evaluate and mentor individuals to encourage their potential and career development
Identify and declare opportunities to share project knowledge and outcomes to benefit our on–going operations; ensure that lessons learnt throughout the projects are documented and shared
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement to achieve productivity and / or efficiency objectives
Maintain an understanding of how project finances contribute to Company bottom–line
Manage Programme IP risks, harvesting and protection in line with best practice for a Licensing Company
Knowledge, skills and experience:
Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline
8+ years of portfolio, programme and/or project management experience
Managing and leading small teams
Excellent communication skills
Good understanding of project management techniques underpinned by technical background
Experience of project managing or working within technically complex engineering projects from R&D through to start of production/product launch
Good experience of customer and supplier relationship management
Ability to adapt rapidly to changing priorities and situations, working in a fast–paced environment
Experience in the following would also be advantageous:
– MS Project Server; APM and / or PRINCE2;
– Agile project management techniques (i.e. Sprint/Scrum);
– Process development and continuous improvement
