Leonardo has a fantastic opportunity for a Principal Systems Engineer to work on a key UK MOD programme developing system–level architectural definitions for a future Sensor and Defensive Aids System (SDAS) capability. The SDAS capability is being developed within an overarching UK MOD Combat Air Systems architecture development programme (Pyramid), and is led within Leonardo by our Major Air Programmes line of business.

The Principal Systems Engineer will apply their knowledge of full lifecycle systems engineering and MBSE methods and tools to develop SDAS component architectures, designs and requirements for highly integrated and interdependent avionic systems that will feature in a new generation of combat aircraft.

The role will require the Principal Systems Engineer to develop and manage system architectures with consideration of the associated interdependencies and interactions across underlying technologies and the engineering development lifecycle. The role therefore inherently requires a strong aptitude for problem solving and managing potentially conflicting inputs from multiple stakeholder groups.

What you will get

Advanced Technology: You will have the ability to contribute to the development of market–leading product development, providing advanced capability and protection to UK platforms.
Agile Systems Engineering: Apply and develop your knowledge of systems engineering in a fast–paced and dynamic agile development team.
Continuous Learning: Whether its engineering lifecycle processes, leadership, or personal development, you?ll be supported in your ongoing professional development though training and mentoring.
Teamwork: You will work alongside like–minded professional engineers in a highly collaborative environment.
Connections: You will be joining an expansive team of around 7,000 people at six major sites across the UK.
EW Heritage: We are proud of our rich heritage in EW, with 100 years of pioneering EW development. Today we're providing the latest advances in sensor technology and enabling our customers to keep pace with an ever–evolving EW environment.

Key Responsibility Areas

Develop architectures, systems requirements, and design definitions for SDAS related components.
Ensure coherency with subsystem, system, and system–of–system considerations.
Undertake trade–off studies and perform critical analyses to explore architecture and design options.
Employ an MBSE approach in conjunction with relevant systems engineering development tools.
Develop system interface definitions, considering data exchange and information services.
Document architecture and design rationale and communicate with relevant stakeholders.
Work within an agile lifecycle to deliver backlog items within defined sprint cycles.
Contribute to technical and engineering lifecycle delivery, workshops and demonstration events.
Produce technical reports and presentations to present key findings and recommendations.
Actively collaborate and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
Work alongside customers and industry partners.

Skills, Qualifications and Knowledge Required

You really must have:

Capability to develop high–level architecture and system requirements based on appropriate technology using inputs from internal stakeholders, partners, collaborators and customers.
High proficiency working across the systems engineering lifecycle.
Experience of engineering gate reviews and the associated assessment of design compliance.
Expertise with MBSE processes and appropriate tools to develop high–level architectural solutions.
Experience of agile development methodologies
Strong numerical and analytical ability.
Ability to cope with a high degree of design complexity and significant levels of uncertainty.
Experience of supporting design / delivery teams to develop complex, technical solutions in accordance with plans and processes.
Self–motivated with an aptitude for problem solving and driving difficult issues to conclusion.
Excellent verbal and written communication / collaboration skills.
Experience of working with a variety of internal and external stakeholders of varying seniorities.

It would be nice if you had:

Knowledge or experience in architectural or systems–level development for airborne sensor and defensive–aids systems.
Knowledge of sensor and defensive–aids systems functionality, performance, and operational use.
Experience working with configuration management tools (e.g. Azure, Git).
Experience of leading and managing teams wrt technical delivery and / or direct line management
