Overview
Line Up Aviation's Executive Search Division is delighted to have been retained by the Light Aircraft Association to recruit an Engineering Director, reporting directly to the CEO this is a new position within the LAA.

Light Aircraft Association
The LAA provides an airworthiness oversight service to its members who wish to build, restore, or own aircraft that operate under UK CAA Permit to Fly conditions. The LAA is a not–for–profit organisation. The LAA currently looks after over 2700 operating aircraft and has oversight of 1600 aircraft currently being built or restored.

The Role
The purpose of the role is to provide technical and managerial leadership to a small team of HQ based design and airworthiness engineers and a large team of geographically dispersed, self– employed inspectors. The aim is to provide an excellent, low–cost service to LAA members and to provide director level technical expertise to the CEO and the Board. There will also be significant interaction with related trade and membership associations, the UK CAA, and the Department for Transport.

Responsibilities

Post Holder in accordance with UK CAA approval BCAR A8–26
Delivering an agreed standard of airworthiness oversight to support the safe construction and operation of LAA members' aircraft.
Technical leadership and direction of all aspects of LAA engineering activities.
The provision of technical expertise and advice to the CEO and the LAA Board.
The development of engineering standards and processes to meet the changing needs of regulations, service standards and scope.
The recruitment and development of the engineering team.
Preparation and delivery of the annual engineering P&L.
Engagement and influencing, both with the LAA membership and with external organisations.
Deputising for and supporting the CEO.
The Candidate
The candidate must have a proven track record of successfully managing either an approved aviation design, continued airworthiness, production, or maintenance activity. Recent experience of performing this function in a light aircraft environment will be a distinct advantage, as will direct experience of the UK Permit to Fly regime.
The candidate will have had experience in delivering successful change management and have developed a high degree of interpersonal skills, especially sound communication, negotiation and influencing skills. A practiced motivator and leader, the candidate will have identified and developed staff for succession planning. This position requires strong analytical skills and a good understanding of the IT systems needed to support LAA engineering activities.
