Network Rail are dedicated to becoming one of Britain's best employers and believe this starts with placing people at the centre of everything we do! And nothing demonstrates that we care better than a commitment to protecting the people our business touches and the planet they live on. This role is central to making that happen.

Brief Description

As the head of health, safety and environment, you'll be a key part of Anglia's leadership team that drives forward plans to make it inevitable that people go home safe and well every day. And your skills will contribute to delivering an ambitious sustainability agenda that keeps rail as the greenest mode of mass transport.

About the role (External)

You won't be alone. You will have a team of committed, motivated EHS professionals to help influence the Anglia route for the better. You will be guided by a route executive team keen to own the risk and make a positive difference and a central team who will help you implement and share best in class approaches to tackle the variety of challenges this high hazard environment creates.

In short, you'll receive all the support you need to make a very real difference in a challenging and rewarding environment. In return, we are looking for you to have the following essential criteria:

  • Significant experience in a senior management role

  • Experience of managing teams in a complex, dynamic environment

  • Experience of leading safety, health, environmental and sustainable development issues

  • Proficient in safety, occupational health and at least working towards environmental management to NEBOSH Diploma level or equivalent

  • Experience of working with Trades Unions and Regulators

Detailed understanding of NR safety and EMS

No day is the same. Every single day you and your team will:

  • Shape and lead the development and delivery of Network Rail Anglia's strategies and plans especially the Home Safe and Environment & Sustainable Development plans.

  • Identify and keep under review all EHS risks relevant to Anglia and the controls put in place to treat them and assure the effectiveness of those controls.

  • Develop and implement a route plan aimed at delivering against our strategies and regulatory requirements including Life Saving Rules, EHS aspects of the Business Critical Rules and other company wide initiatives.

  • Coach the Route leadership team to meet their EHS responsibilities as managers and advise the Route Director on the capacity of the organisation to deliver planned objectives.

  • Act as the Designated Competent Person (DCP) for workforce accidents including providing advice on accident and incident investigation tools, techniques and processes. Report all accidents and incidents, follow the Fair Culture processes and drive the highest quality of investigation.

  • Be responsible for the route in reviewing the efficiency of investigation recommendations, mitigating the highlighted risks, and creating a culture of learning from incidents and thinking about broader application across the route and region.

  • Develop and embed effective performance monitoring arrangements to enable progress against the Route HSE Plans to be assessed.

  • Own the implementation of EHS culture change programmes within the framework established by the corporate Safety, Technical and Engineering (STE) function.

  • Lead engagement with regulatory bodies, trades unions, customers and other stakeholders on EHS matters specific to the route.
