We are leading the digital transformation of HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). HMRC is building a modern, digital tax administration and runs the biggest digital operation in Government, providing digital services for 45 million individuals and 4.9 million business customers. Our digital programme is multi–award winning and the envy of other government organisations.
Valuation Office Agency Customer Group (VOA CG) provides digital services and IT support to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA): drawing on HMRC's digital expertise to ensure our customer (the VOA) gets the right level of service as well as building and supporting specialist unique services.
There are some important attributes that we are looking for in anyone joining VOA CG. You must have a collaborative approach and a passion to communicate effectively. You will take accountability and ownership with the ability to coach, mentor, reflect and ability to give and take feedback. You will be flexible and adaptable, working with a sense of urgency and passionate about having 'Customer' at the heart of what you do.
Job description
This is an exciting opportunity to earn while you learn. You'll be supported by your line manager, skills coach and the business analyst community, as well as fellow apprentices on the programme, so you will have plenty sources of encouragement and support to help you succeed.
This is a permanent position; however, you will be given 20% off the job training to allow you to complete your apprenticeship within your working hours. Typically, the apprenticeship will run for 18/24 months.
As a Business Analyst Apprentice, you will be a key member of the delivery team designing and modifying our IT systems. Collaborating with our colleagues within the wider business to gather information, documents and data to analyse and identify our business needs and requirements.
You will undertake grounded research to identify and understand emerging needs and provides detailed comment on a range of projects, applying robust processes and producing best practice agreed documentation.
You will define project needs recognising the potential for automation of business processes and improvements in information systems and feed these into the programme/portfolio process to enable resource to be appropriately allocated.
You will keep abreast of changes to user habits, preferences and behaviours across various digital platforms and understand the implications for successful delivery of government digital services.
Role responsibilities:
• Coordinate the identification of key individuals and domain specialists to conduct interviews to understand their problems and needs
• Identify and tailor business requirements into supplier proposals
• Gather, document and help verify information relating to business analysis and requirements activities
• Lead and support meetings and workshops with IT suppliers and other key individuals
• Identify, document and mitigate risks and issues, raising where appropriate
• Challenge constructively and act as a critical friend to achieve solutions that are fit for purpose
• Gain an understanding of how to integrate systems and the challenges of designing, building and testing interfaces between systems.
• Assist product owners in defining, prioritising and maintaining an agile backlog
• Assist in the preparation of business cases defining potential benefits and options to achieve those benefits with their associated risks
• Continuously improve approaches to IT requirements gathering, analysis and business modelling, including educating, coaching and developing the skills of colleagues to improve quality of service
• Actively participate in the Business Analyst community, sharing and re–applying skills and knowledge and bringing in best practice

• Logical and can apply good practice approaches to relevant standards
• Passionate about IT, enjoys solving Problems and different approaches to solving problems.
• User focussed – understands users and can identify who they are and what their needs are.
• Able to work with business and technology colleagues to translate business problems into technical designs.
• Able to visualise the ideal user service, come up with design ideas and possible design approaches.
• A great teammate and is able to work as part of a team on the design of components of larger systems.
• Self–motivated, professional and open to continuous learning
• Able to facilitate collaboration and lead with effective communication to support design, build and delivery to meet the user need
Qualifications
You must also hold one of the following:
• Business or Business related degree (e.g. Finance, Economics, Maths etc.)
• OR Non business related degree + 6 months' work experience
• OR Level 3 Qualification + 12 months of work experience
• OR 2 years work experience
Examples of work experience may include: Retail jobs, Customer Service, HR Function, Office Administration etc.
Examples of work experience that does not count on its own:
Working in a Pub where the role just involves dispensing drinks and taking payment only
Part time/limited hours of work done in the 12 months. Must be 12 months full time.
You must also meet the below requirements:
• Valid passport/birth certificate and NI number
• Must have lived in the UK and/or EEA for 3 years prior to apprenticeship start date
• Not undertaking another apprenticeship or government funded qualification at the same time
