The chance to be Chief Executive of a prestigious organisation does not often arise – but this is one such exciting opportunity.

As Chief Executive of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT), you will drive our strategy to raise the profile of the profession and the organisation, further building recognition of the value of occupational therapy with government, the public, our members and potential members, both nationally – across the four nations – and internationally.

Working closely with the Chair of Council, you will ensure RCOT is a thriving membership organisation, overseeing effective governance of its staff and resources, applying rigorous risk management and ensuring its robust financial health. Your visionary leadership will ensure the profession continues to flourish amidst the challenges and opportunities of a changing world.

With a strong track record in leading and delivering organisational transformation and cultural change, you will have leadership experience within a non–profit setting, which may include the allied healthcare professions, other Royal Colleges or equivalent organisations. You will have a profound understanding of the role of professional bodies, ideally within the health and care landscape. You do not need to be a qualified occupational therapist, but a deep understanding of and a commitment to the profession is crucial.

A highly influential and strategic thinker, your excellent relationship–building and networking capabilities will ensure you identify new opportunities and drive forward initiatives that support the aims of RCOT and further develop the occupational therapy profession

Your commitment to equality and valuing diversity will ensure RCOT continues to thrive under trusted and stimulating leadership. In addition to the role of Chief Executive of RCOT, you will also assume the role of General Secretary of the British Association of Occupational Therapists (BAOT), and ensure that both RCOT and BAOT meet their legal responsibilities and duties.

The role requires a high degree of tact, diplomacy and emotional intelligence, as well as resilience and flexibility. The Chief Executive will inspire trustees, staff and an entire profession from diverse backgrounds. A commitment to understanding and serving the interests of RCOT members is essential.

The role is full–time. In the current context of COVID–19, the majority of staff are presently working from home.

RCOT is the professional body for occupational therapy representing over 33,000 occupational therapists across the UK. Occupational therapists provide life–changing support to people managing illness, injuries and a wide range of physical and mental health conditions. Uniquely, they enable people to carry out daily activities ('occupations') which are essential for health and happiness. This vital care helps people recover and build new skills to enjoy a full and independent life.

RCOT plays a crucial role in setting and raising standards, campaigning to raise the profile of occupational therapy and the value its members deliver, supporting members' development and influencing policy.
