Ensuring that property related legal risks and liabilities are effectively managed, you will provide effective legal support to the UK business, ensuring commercial goals are achieved. This will be primarily real estate work – leasing, development, construction, project management, property management, acquisitions, disposals, financings, joint ventures, and planning agreements. You will work closely with the business and identify commercial and legal risks by offering pragmatic solutions. Specifically you will:

* Provide commercially focused legal advice on all aspects of leasing transactions (both for new build and renewals for existing buildings), property management matters, acquisitions and disposals and general development matters;
* Support the business in wider transactions by managing selected external lawyers as the need arises, ensuring that the Company manages risk and receives the best possible legal advice in a cost effective manner and a commercial context;
* Work with Group Treasury team on legal aspects of property financings;
* Conduct effective due diligence, ensuring that property related legal risks and liabilities are recognised and evaluated, and that property transactions are effectively managed
* Develop and maintain consistent property precedents and protocols; and
* Establish and maintain processes (as needed) in order to ensure proper documentation and smooth communication between the Legal and other departments.

This is an excellent opportunity for a commercial property lawyer currently working in private practice to undertake a varied high quality workload in a global blue chip business where property is at the heart of the business.

We are keen to hear from Real Estate lawyers with at least 3 years pqe experience gained in a leading private practice law firm. We are ideally keen to hear from individuals with a varied real estate experience, development experience is highly desirable.

The Team:

The Costs and Recoveries team obtains work from insurers and commercial clients.

The Costs team comprises several distinct teams specialising in a specific area of costs (pre-litigation/post litigation challenges and recovery). The Costs Unit focuses on driving through our insurer clients' costs strategy and building and strengthening client relationships. Team members aim to build strong links and establish good rapport with the clients and claims handlers, which ensures that team members understand the clients businesses and exceed their expectations.

The recoveries team makes recoveries from third parties who damage insured property (usually buildings or motor vehicles). The majority of the work is undertaken on no win no fee CFA arrangements.

The Birmingham office is looking for bright and confident individuals with good communication skills to join the Costs Budgeting team, focussing on litigated cases.


The Role

The successful candidate will start off in the Costs Budgeting team, but will have the opportunity to apply for vacancies as they arise in the recovery team if they so wish

Specific responsibilities in the costs team include but are not restricted to:

• After initial training, you will have the responsibility for running your own case load of costs matters, preparing costs budgeting forms, setting strategy on these and negotiating settlement/running to detailed assessment by the Court.
• It is envisaged that as you gain experience you will increase your workload having more responsibility in running more complex and higher value cases.
• Building relationships with internal client contacts at all levels.
• Contribute to knowledge sharing within the Costs Unit and internal clients.
• Conduct work in line with client protocols, exceeding Cost Unit benchmarks and providing timely and accurate management information and billing.
• Handle confidential information in line with the firms data security protocols.

The Person

• Paralegal with previous Civil Litigation experience.
• A Law degree or equivalent. We will consider candidates without a law degree if they have significant experience of litigation particularly in costs or recoveries;
• Client focused with an ability to build strong relationships with internal and external clients;
• Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure, dealing confidently with changing and conflicting priorities;
• Confident communicator and negotiator;
• Quality and customer service orientated;
• Flexible with an ability to adapt to rapid change, both internally and in the context of clients' businesses;
• Team player with a collegiate approach to knowledge sharing and problem solving, particular in the case of multi-site clients which are supported across the team;
