This role is within the Large Loss Property Damage Team based in Birmingham. The Large Loss team is one of the specialisms within the Property Recovery Service Group (PRS) which is based in both Birmingham and Bristol.

The PRS team provides solutions to the Insurance Property Damage sector and Costs Services. The PRS team in Birmingham and Bristol PRS has 4 Partners, 8 Associates, 36 Solicitors, 4 Legal Executives and 57 paralegals who provides expert and practical advice over a range of areas:

Public liability / property damage claims
Professional indemnity claims - defending Architects, Surveyors, Engineers etc
Property subsidence , property recovery, policy coverage advice/fraud
Motor recovery
Costs

The Role

Specific responsibilities include but are not restricted to:
• Act for a number of large commercial / insurer clients of the firm in their property litigation disputes, specifically in respect of damage to buildings caused by subsidence. Most matters will be multi-track claimant related files funded by Collective Conditional Fee Agreements or hourly rates
• Manage a small team of 3-4 fee earners. This will involve supervising, mentoring and
coaching team members, and ensuring that team billing targets are achieved
• New business generation
• Prepare updates and attend subsidence forums
• Handle a varied workload of litigation in accordance with our client protocols and with an appropriate level of supervision. Exercise full compliance with DAC Beachcroft protocols on billing and credit control and demonstrate a high level of financial management in respect of own files
• The day-to-day activities of the role include:
o Analysis of evidence and setting case strategies encompassing both
technical and commercial considerations
o Obtaining and drafting pleadings, witness statements and letters of response,
o conducting (telephone) negotiation of claims,
o preparing detailed schedules,
o sound file management – to include consistent and accurate: billing, management of WIP and file closures
o updating Management Information
• Act as a point of contact for clients, demonstrating a level of knowledge and skill
commensurate with experience. Maintain and develop technical knowledge through
attendance at training sessions, reading appropriate publications and exceeding Law
Society CPD requirements
• Aim to achieve a minimum budgeted annual target of 1440 chargeable hours per year.
• Support marketing and business development activity within the team e.g. attending
marketing events and client training
• Build an awareness of the Firm's other services. Build effective internal and external
networks and maintain an awareness of the firm's strategies and plans
• Handle confidential information in line with the firms data security protocols

The Person

The ideal candidate should be:
• 1-4 years qualified solicitor/manager (or similar level of experience) with a demonstrable interest or previous experience in property litigation
• Significant experience in both claimant and defendant subsidence instructions
• Previous supervision experience, and good people management skills including the ability to motivate, coach and mentor team members at all levels
• Technically able, particularly with regard to the Civil Procedure Rules
• Excellent relationship and client handling skills. Able to deal confidently and professionally with clients on day to day issues. Able to demonstrate a reasonable level of self-sufficiency, combined with an awareness of the boundaries of own competence/authority
• An ability to adopt a commercial perspective rather than an ‘academic’ approach to legal issues. Be commercially focused, both in terms of the client and firm's requirements
• Change orientated with a positive, flexible approach towards the implementation of new initiatives
• Team orientated and collegiate with a willingness to share knowledge with and support other members of the team
