St. George’s University London (SGUL) is the only remaining independent medical school in the country, providing medical and healthcare training for over 250 years. Its partnership and co-location with St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust Hospital has created a unique learning and research environment.

SGUL has recently been restructured to enable it to deliver a new and ambitious research strategy and to achieve further improvements in its teaching capability, with a separate Education Institute and three Research Institutes.

As a result of this restructure, the University has identified the need for a Head of Financial Performance & Analysis, who will ensure effective financial management, performance improvement and decision support. You will report to and deputise for the Finance & Commercial Director and will liaise closely with the academic Institute Directors and the Chief Operating Officer. The priorities are to:

• Evaluate and implement a major financial improvement programme to achieve SGUL’s financial strategy;
• Engage regularly with budget holders to educate and deliver reports and metrics to support them in their decision making;
• Develop a high performing Finance team and a customer-focused mindset;
• Assess viable investment cases for the university, which could include new course offerings, , capital projects and restructuring;
• Produce consistent and accurate financial reporting to all SGUL’s senior stakeholders and advise on financial implications and potential action plans;

• And, not least, contribute to a positive change culture, with a results-driven environment and strong team ethos;

You will be a fully qualified accountant, with strong interpersonal skills and good experience improving financial performance, reporting and budgeting. You will also demonstrate an ability to build relationships with academics and other senior stakeholders to improve accountability, financial clarity and confidence.
Whilst you will have a strong empathy with higher education, your background is likely to include the commercial sector. However, the most important element of your experience will be evidence of your determination to initiate and deliver a financial transformation at St George’s.

The role of the Head of Finance has overall control and responsibility for all financial aspects of company strategy and is expected to analyse figures and implement recommendations based on these findings with the most profitable outcome.


Duties and Responsibilities

Work with senior teams to grow the business formulating strategies and plans

Lead and develop the finance team in order to ensure the effective operation of the function, whilst contributing to the financial and business direction of the company and supporting the company's ambitious plans for the future.

To manage, lead and motivate the finance department, ensuring the efficient performance of accounting routines and controls. To direct and supervise the activities of the staff in the accounting, administration and all related functions. To ensure that the finance and accounting function is integrated into the business.

Review of monthly management accounts and investigation of variances to budget then setting targets and recovery plans.

Review of audited accounts and variations to management accounts.

To become progressively aware of all functions of the business and take overall responsibility for accounting activities; to provide clear objective direction and support to the Board on all matters relating to the financial and management accounting activities of the company.

Developing a robust due diligence process and working closely with professional advisers in respect of achieving the practical and technical financial and accounting goals of the business, by providing ongoing accounting support to the management of the company.

Lead and manage the budgeting process, formulation of annual budgets and targets. Prepare and agree with the Board the financial forecasts, budgets and cash flow forecasts to assist in the development of longer term plans for the business and provide the financial and related commercial input into those plans.

To review and update financial controls and computerised accounting systems. To monitor and develop computerised systems to cope with changing work practices and other requirements.

Capital expenditure – evaluation and preparation of submissions.

Overall cash management on an ongoing basis. Ensure that the company's cash flows are re-forecast regularly and that the actual flows are compared to forecast on a period basis and to take action when variances occur.

To manage the cash and treasury functions of the business.

To ensure that the monthly financial reporting package is submitted to the Board on time and that it is presented in as simple a form as possible and with accompanying analysis.

To maintain contact with outside agencies, including auditors, bankers, insurance brokers and legal advisors.

To review accounting policy and practice and to ensure that the highest professional standards are maintained at all times and in all areas of the business

Overall control of all financial transactions and accountancy matters, including audit systems, ensuring that the regulatory requirements of all statutory bodies are met.

To oversee and complete the statutory accounts, whilst complying with all statutory financial, accounting and taxation requirements and to liaise with the auditors both during finalisation of the accounts and as and when necessary during the financial year . Presentation of annual accounts with recommendations.


To undertake ad hoc projects from time to time, as and when necessary



Candidate Specification

Qualifications

Candidates should ideally be educated to degree level and must be qualified accountants, ACA, ACCA or CIMA.

Experience

Candidates should have proven experience of the following:

• The development and application of financial accounting policy and high standards of practice including the application of sound internal systems and controls
• Accounting procedures from records of prime entry to the preparation of period and statutory accounts
• Management accounting, working to set timetables, including the application of budgetary controls and cash flow forecasting and monitoring procedures
• Financial management including negotiations with external agencies such as bankers, prospective vendors and suppliers. In this context, experience of investment appraisals and acquisitions is desirable
• In-house, online computerised accounting systems Departmental management, including the supervision, development, direction and management of accounting and other relevant staff
• Providing strong commercial input, covering such areas as cost control and pricing
• Other functions such as treasury, company secretarial Accounting for international trading including dealing in foreign currencies
