My client is a premier installer & maintainer of electronic security & life protection systems. Based in North Nottinghamshire the company is experiencing significant growth. Turnover is currently £2.5m per annum and is forecast to increase to £4m within a year. They have a blue chip customer base. They are now looking to appoint a commercially minded Financial Controller who has the potential to move up in the Company.

The Financial Controller Role:

The role is very much hands on. Sufficient support is available for the majority of day to day processing, but the successful candidate will need to get stuck in when necessary.

• Nuts & bolts duties will include:
• Cash flow control
• Monthly management accounts and other ad hoc reporting
• Payroll & HR
• Negotiations with customers & suppliers including contract review
• Credit control
• Supplier payments

All the above should be second nature to anybody who has worked in an SME and these should almost take place seamlessly in the background.

Critical skills in addition to the "basic" tasks above:

• The company operates several different systems. These require a total overhaul to bring them up to date & to cope with growth. The successful candidate needs to drive this process
• Assist the management team with strategic thinking, not just from a financial perspective
• To be a sounding board & to offer good solid advice
• The company believes in strong commercial relationships with both customers & suppliers. The successful candidate will need to genuinely enjoy this aspect of the role
• Have the ability to communicate at all levels
• Have the tact, diplomacy & skill to influence board members

The successful candidate:

• Will be a qualified accountant
• Will have worked in a fast moving SME environment at a senior level
• Will have the ability to think on their feet & not be a shrinking violet
• Will need to be a bit of a free spirit & understand that in life most lines are blurred, and black and white aren't true colours
• Will be an income generator rather than merely an income reporter
• Will have the ability to manage & motivate non-financial personnel
• Will thrive on cut & thrust and be robust
