Do you enjoy working in a fast-paced change environment? Want to feel part of a growing financial services brand? A leading retail bank in Edinburgh is recruiting a lawyer to join their business on a 12 month FTC basis.
Working within the legal team you will provide effective and timely advice on a broad range of commercial issues. You will be confident and self-motivated with relevant commercial experience from private practice or an in-house position in a corporate/commercial contracts role.
Your new role
You will report to the Head of Legal this 12 month fixed term contract role will be responsible for:
- Supporting the Retail Banking Legal Team to provide targeted, commercially focused regulatory legal advice to the business on product development, operational processes, consumer credit related queries, regulatory legal issues and, customer documentation demonstrating an awareness of the commercial implications of their advice and the customer outcomes that will result.
- Supporting the Retail Banking Legal Team in identifying regulatory legal risks, changes and issues to the business and proactively working with the Retail Banking legal team to assist them to minimise the impacts and rectification of any such issues in a regulatory and legal compliant manner.
- Identifying and appropriately escalating high risk or complex issues to Head of Legal.
- Identify regulatory legal risks and changes in regulation, regulatory approach and best practice to the business and proactively work with them to manage strategy and minimise the impacts.
- Being one the main points of contact for consumer credit related issues and queries from the project teams supporting the building of the Bank's new platforms.
- You will provide effective and timely legal advice on a broad range of specialist and complex legal matters to support the business. Confident and self-motivated individual with extensive retail banking experience.
- Ability to communicate and influence at all levels with strong organisational and analytical skills.
What you'll need to succeed
- A qualified solicitor with a minimum of 4 years PQE
- A demonstrably thorough working knowledge of UK regulatory framework and regulated banking, coupled with an appreciation of the business needs of a retail bank.
- Must have a detailed working knowledge and experience of Consumer Credit Law. or Insurance Law, with solid experience advising on at least two of the following:
- · Customer complaints and litigation
- · Retail Banking Law (inc all products the bank offers)
- · Financial Regulation Law (inc CONC, BCOBS etc)
- · Payments law
- · Responsible Lending
- · Financial Promotions
- · Commercial Contracts and drafting Customer Terms
- · Equality, good conduct and vulnerability
- · Working knowledge of data protections law
- · CAP Code and ASA Procedures
- Maintains up to date working knowledge/understanding of relevant areas of law.
- Maintains up to date knowledge of commercial developments in specialist field.
- Has a deep understanding of the retail banking market, products and services, and related main legal developments/issues relating to the role.
- Manages own time efficiently, delivering work on time according to requirements and keeping more senior colleagues up to date with developments as appropriate
- Good IT skills
- A friendly and approachable team player with ability to working closely with others to deliver results under tight time constraints.
- Proven track record of working on own initiative, with the ability to introduce fresh thinking to the role and the wider team.
- Builds and maintains effective working relationships internally and externally
- Excellent communication skills - ability to communicate effectively with anyone in any environment, e.g. able to translate complex / technical issues to meet the audience's competency level
