We are delighted to have been retained by one of Hertfordshire’s leading law firms to recruit their new Chief Executive. This role is responsible for the performance and development of the firm’s business and for driving the firm towards its strategic goals.
The role will have many strands to it and will incorporate the following:
Leadership
- To inspire confidence, internally and externally, in the capabilities of the senior management team and the firm’s strengths and aspirations.
- To recommend and implement as necessary changes to the firm’s management structure as agreed with the Partners.
- To facilitate succession plans for Partners and key personnel. To represent the firm to clients, referrers, professional bodies, suppliers and general public in line with the firm's ethos, culture and values.
- To drive the recruitment and selection of senior hires
- To formulate and propose to the Partnership for approval a strategy for the firm which is directed towards the profitable and effective operation of the firm
- To successfully communicate and implement the firm's strategy.
- To develop and put in place strategic operating plans and budgets for the firm's fee-earning teams, offices and central fund to reflect longer-term objectives and ambitions of the firm.
Regulatory and Control
- Subject to appropriate training and /or qualifications, perform the role of the firm’s COLP (Compliance Office for Legal Practice) and COFA (Compliance Officer for Finance Administration) or oversee the personnel responsible for those roles
- Ensure the firm meets the requirements of various quality standards eg Lexcel
- To put in place an effective system of controls throughout the firm covering non-financial as well as financial controls
- To ensure that the firm and its business comply with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and, wherever possible, best practice.
Communicating and Reporting
- To report to the Executive Partner and keep her/him informed.
- To report to the Executive Partner and Partners regularly on the operation of the firm both at Partners' meetings and at other times.
- To invite consultation and feedback from Partners on matters of concern to them.
- To provide such information to the Partners as they require for them to assess performance of the business and the achievement of the agreed strategy and budget.
- To provide an appropriate and satisfactory system for management reporting on a monthly basis.
- To champion open communication and consultation systems for all staff throughout the firm.
Management
- To be directly responsible for the overall leadership and management of Practice Support within the Firm.
- To take overall responsibility for the firm's administration including specifically but not limited to, accounting and insurance services, lease obligations, renewals and negotiations, IT, training, HR and management.
- To act as line manager for:
- Fee Earning Team Leaders
- Head of Finance
- Director of Marketing and Business Development
- HR Adviser
- IT Coordinator
- General Office Manager
Person Specification
- Experience of the strategic management of a top 200 law firm, preferably of £10m turnover p.a.or more.
- Demonstrable experience of enabling and facilitating financial growth of a law firm through setting a strategic vision, strategic planning and implementation
- A sound understanding of the financial management of a law firm including a working understanding of financial reports and data and how it relates to the performance of the firm
- Experience of successful change management as a leader and implementer.
- Previous management experience including the ability to provide support and guidance to a full range of practice support staff.
