Chair and Member of the NMC Appointments Board

About Us

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the independent professional regulator for 680,000 nurses and midwives in the UK. We exist to protect the health of patients, set the standards for the education of nurses and midwives, maintain a register of nurses and midwives, and investigate those on our register whose fitness to practise is called into question.

The Appointments Board is vital to the smooth running of our fitness to practise function. The Board’s remit includes oversight of the appointment and reappointment of fitness to practise panel members and legal assessors. The Board also plays a crucial role in scrutinising and approving the policies and contractual arrangements that support panel members and legal assessors.

Successful applicants will be joining at an important time. We have significantly improved our fitness to practise work in recent years. We are committed, through our five-year strategy, to continuing on this trajectory of improvement.

About you

We are seeking a Chair and one member to join the Board. To reflect the Board’s impartial role, we cannot accept applications from those currently on our register.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to, and understanding of, the healthcare sector. They should bring excellent communication, influencing and analytical skills, along with, given the Board’s role, a proven track record of senior level experience in human resources and / or contract management. Applicants for the Chair position must be able to demonstrate skills in effective leadership aligned with strategic experience.

Board members will be expected to commit approximately 8 to 10 days a year to the role. Remuneration is £260.00 per day and reasonable expenses.
