This is a high-profile opportunity to use your strategic creativity and innovative approaches as you project the work and outcomes of the Secretariat and raise the profile of the wider Commonwealth’s shared values and achievements. This will involve managing and leading a team presenting official pan-Commonwealth views and perspectives with impact as well as tact and political sensitivity. Individually, you will actively advance communications and public affairs results, including as the Commonwealth Secretary-General’s spokesperson.

Yours is a crucial and wide-ranging remit as part of the Secretariat’s management team. It includes formulating, developing and implementing media, PR, communications and information strategies; optimising human and budgetary resources; advising and supporting colleagues; and developing relations with editors, correspondents and other contacts within the broadcast, print and other media throughout the Commonwealth and beyond. You are responsible for supporting the wider external communications work of the Secretariat as well as internal communications.

With at least 15 years at senior management level including ten or so years’ experience of international media, you will have developed and delivered multi-faceted media and communications strategies, including in-house corporate communications; have operated within an inter-governmental organisation; and, be familiar with ICT platforms for public communication and outreach. Also, as leader of a 20-strong team, you must have a substantial track record of effective people management.

As the inter-governmental body of the Commonwealth, comprising 53 sovereign states, our aim is to provide sustainable and people-centred democratic culture and development through professional advice, transfer of best practice, and the enhancement of skills and knowledge, all to the betterment of over two billion citizens, 60% of whom are under 30 years of age.
